‘I thought I was going to die,’ says victim hit by ‘2 Fast 2 Furious’ star’s husband
The man police say was run over by the husband of “2 Fast 2 Furious” actor and restaurant chain heiress Devon Aoki Monday in Coral Gables said he was yelling at him to stop as he was running over his leg.
“He’s looking me straight in the eyes as he’s running me over. I’m pounding directly on the front of the car just screaming at him for my life. He’s just looking at me and slowly rolling forward onto my leg,” said Jonathan King, who filed suit Thursday against the driver, James Hunter Bailey, and his wife Aoki.
Coral Gables police say Bailey, 40, hit King, who was riding an electric scooter, with his white Audi SQ7 SUV around 5:15 p.m. King’s leg was pinned under the SUV’s wheel and is now broken in multiple places.
Bailey drove off without rendering aid, calling the police or exchanging insurance information, according to his arrest report. Before leaving the scene, King’s left leg was trapped under the Audi’s tire, according to the lawsuit filed in Miami-Dade County Circuit Court.
Headed toward Biltmore
King, 34, was on vacation with his girlfriend, Mayra Yomjinda, and they were on their way to the Biltmore Hotel riding separate scooters to meet some friends before flying back home, he said in an interview from Yomjinda’s home in Portland, Oregon.
Bailey narrowly missed Yomjinda before hitting King, King said. And, when he first made impact, he kept driving forward.
The incident was caught on nearby cameras, and witnesses got Bailey’s license plate number. Police tracked him down to the Pinecrest address registered to his car, according to his arrest report.

Instead of surrendering right away, though, Bailey ran into his eight-bedroom, seven-bath home, valued at $9.1-million by the county property appraiser, and locked the door before coming outside a few minutes later, police say.
Bailey, who King’s attorneys say is a “Miami-based investor,” was booked into Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center on leaving the scene of an accident with serious bodily injury, resisting an officer without violence and failing to yield for a pedestrian at a crosswalk. He has since been released on a bond of $7,500.
Information about his legal representation was not immediately available.
Broken leg
According to the lawsuit, King and Yomjinda were both on scooters driving east on Giralda Avenue in downtown Coral Gables. They were waiting for traffic to clear so they could make a right turn onto Douglas Road, according to the lawsuit.
Bailey was behind them on Giralda in his Audi and crashed into King, his lawyer Justin Shapiro stated in the suit.
King pleaded with Bailey to reverse his car, but he “did not immediately react,” the lawsuit states. Yomjinda then opened the driver’s side door and yelled at Bailey to back up the car, Shapiro, a partner at Miami law firm Leesfield & Partners, wrote.
“Mr. Bailey just sits there. We don’t know what was going on in his head,” Shapiro told the Herald, calling the situation “as bizarre as it is tragic.”
“Finally, after significant delay,” Bailey reversed his car, but instead of helping King, he drove away, the lawsuit states.
Paramedics took King to Coral Gables Hospital with a broken leg. He will require reconstructive surgery and is likely to have permanent issues with the leg, Shapiro said. On Thursday, King said doctors were still waiting for swelling to go down before they can operate.
King is suing Bailey for negligence, but Shapiro states in the lawsuit that the complaint will soon be amended to “add punitive damage claims stemming from the gross negligence and/or intentional misconduct.”
“One of the reasons we filed this lawsuit so quickly is we have no reason to believe that Mr. Bailey is going to accept responsibility for this,” Shapiro said. “So the only way to handle this situation in my experience is to file a lawsuit and go get your day in court.”
Bailey’s wife, Aoki, 43, is being sued for vicarious liability because she owns the Audi, according to the lawsuit.
Aoki, who starred as a street racer alongside the late Paul Walker in “2 Fast 2 Furious,” has appeared in several successful Hollywood films and television shows. But she is more known as a fashion model, appearing in advertisements for major labels like Louis Vuitton, Chanel and Versace, according to Models.com.
Benihana founder
Her father, Rocky Aoki, who died in 2008, founded the Japanese-themed restaurant chain Benihana, which is now based in Aventura.
Her brother is record producer and internationally known DJ Steve Aoki.
King said he recently lost his job as a data science engineer in the AI field. He said he planned on resuming job search after the holidays, but he’s unsure how his injury will impact those efforts.
King also said that Yomjinda was traumatized by what she saw.
“We both have this shared experience where she thought I was going to die, and I thought I was going to die,” he said. “We’ve been crying every day about it.”
