One worker killed, another injured at downtown Miami high-rise site, police say
A worker was killed Monday in a construction incident on the current top floor of a high-rise building site in downtown Miami, police said.
Maria Fernanda González Garcia, 25, and another construction worker, who wasn’t identified, were trapped underneath a structural column that suddenly fell while it was being erected, the Miami Police Department said.
The column fell around 12:41 p.m. at 555 N. Miami Ave., police said. Miami Fire Rescue gave both workers emergency medical attention at the construction site before taking them to Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital.
Garcia died shortly after arriving. The injured man was still receiving medical care Tuesday and “faces a lengthy recovery process,” police said. No additional information was immediately available.
The incident happened at the address listed for Okan Tower, which is a residential and hotel building under construction. It had reached its 50th floor out of 70 in March and will be 902-feet tall upon completion. A spokesperson for Okan Tower didn’t respond Tuesday to a request for comments.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims, their families, friends and coworkers during this difficult time,” Miami police said.
