‘Hot spots’ remain in large Opa-locka junkyard fire, Miami-Dade Fire Rescue says
More than 80 units were called in to battle a six-alarm fire at an Opa-locka junkyard Monday night, and firefighters continued putting out hot spots Tuesday morning, Miami-Dade Fire Rescue said.
The fire started around 5 p.m. Monday in the 13100 block of Cairo Lane. Firefighters originally responded to reports of several vehicles on fire, but found the blaze extended to three nearby businesses, Miami-Dade Fire Rescue said.
No one was reportedly injured in the fire, which was made more challenging to extinguish because of windy conditions, the department said.
Chief Ralph Baena said that all residents who were evacuated from their homes Monday returned by Tuesday. But the fire department warned residents to be cautious of heavy smoke in the air.
The fire department said in a social media post Tuesday that intermittent road shutdowns are possible as firefighters continue to work in the area.
Tri-Rail, which runs on tracks run just to the west of the smoldering site, operated on schedule Tuesday morning after reported delays on Monday.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
