A junkyard fire in the Opa-locka area had Miami-Dade Fire Rescue warning residents of smoke in the area and asking people to steer clear of the scene.

A junkyard fire sent fire crews racing to the Opa-locka area as they tried to extinguish the five-alarm blaze Monday.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue warned the public to steer clear of the area around the fire, which was underway after 6 p.m. at the 13100 block of Cairo Lane.

“Those in the area may see or smell smoke as firefighters continue working to extinguish the fire,” the agency said in a statement. “We ask the public to avoid the area so first responders can work safely.”

That area off of Northwest 135th Street in Opa-locka has multiple junkyards. Footage from NBC 6 showed large plumes of black smoke towering over the area.
