Travel alert: Storms halt flights at Miami airport. What to know about ground stop
Flights at Miami International Airport were halted Tuesday morning as thunderstorms blanketed the area.
The Federal Aviation Administration issued the ground stop at 7 a.m. Tuesday for arriving flights, according to MIA. The ground stop was lifted around 7:55 a.m., a spokesperson for the Federal Aviation Administration said.
Some flights were also “briefly delayed due to lightning near MIA between 8:30 a.m. and 9 a.m., Greg Chin, communications director for the Miami-Dade Aviation Department, told the Herald.
As of 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, an FAA warning continued for departure delays out of the Miami airport by “an average of 30 minutes and increasing.”
A similar departure delay notice issued for Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport on Tuesday has been discontinued.
According to the FlightAware tracker, 85 flights were delayed in Miami as of 9 a.m. Tuesday.
Rain is forecast through South Florida on Tuesday and a flood watch is in effect for Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties through 10 p.m.
