Weather alert: South Florida under a flood watch as rain moves in. See details
A flood watch was issued for South Florida on Tuesday as a week’s worth of rain moves into the region.
The watch, which covers Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties, is in effect until 10 p.m. Forecasters say several rounds of heavy rainfall, with up to four to six inches possible in some places, could result in flooding.
“It’s going to be a rainy week,” said forecaster Chuck Caracozza of the National Weather Service Miami. “It will become more widespread.”
A front hanging over the state is expected to soak South Florida. While this week may not be a total washout, with rains coming and going, there will be a noticeable change from the mostly sunny skies we have been seeing the past few days.
Tuesday and Wednesday carry an 80% chance of rain, according to the weather service, and Thursday’s rain chance notches down to 70%. While rain is expected on Friday and Saturday, the chances decrease to 40% and 30%, respectively.
And with the stormy weather come rougher conditions on the water — for swimmers and boaters.
The weather service has issued a riptide advisory from 8 p.m. Wednesday through 8 p.m. Thursday in Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach. “Rip currents can sweep even the best swimmers away,” the advisory warns.
The weather service also issued a small-craft advisory Tuesday evening through Wednesday evening, when the Intracoastal will be choppy to rough.
With the rain, expect a minor cool-down.
High temperatures will be in the upper-70s to 80 through Friday, Caracozza said, and overnight and early morning lows will dip to the upper-60s and low-70s this week.
“Our attention will really be ... on Tuesday to Thursday this week,” said Shane Hinton, a CBS News Miami meteorologist. Hinton said the rainfall could develop into “heavier downpours.”
There is some good news in the forecast: The second Inter Miami game at Nu Stadium on Saturday will be played under drier conditions, with a 20% to 30% chance of rain on the horizon.
