Firefighters battle 20-acre blaze near West Kendall. Fire over halfway contained
Miami-Dade firefighters are working to put out a grass fire that sparked in West Kendall on Wednesday afternoon, fire rescue said. Residents are being warned of the billowing smoke.
Around 3:20 p.m., Miami-Dade Fire Rescue said it was battling the fire near Southwest 127 Avenue and Southwest 128 Street, near the Miami Executive Airport. Fire rescue has more than 20 fire crews in the area.
The smoke plume has grown large and can be seen from several miles away. Authorities warn it may cause issues for those with respiratory conditions, who are advised to stay indoors and recirculate their A/C in their homes and cars.
George, 67, who did not want to provide his last name, said as he was taking his afternoon walk in front of the Azul townhouses along Southwest 127th Avenue, that he has never seen a brush fire this large in his 15 years living in the area.
“It’s been very dry, but it did rain the other day, so I don’t know if this was deliberate or what,” he said as the wind blew ash directly west about a mile across a field from where the brunt of the fire was burning late afternoon.
The fire is burning at least 20 acres and is 65% contained, according to the Florida Forest Service.
