Storms kill power for tens of thousands in Miami area. Here’s the latest FPL update

After tens of thousands of people woke up without power Thursday morning in South Florida and the Keys following storms that ripped through the region — causing heavy rains, flooding, strong winds and toppling trees — most customers saw their service restored by the evening.

The power outrages were widespread and covered large swaths in South Florida, including Miami, Miami Beach, Coral Gables, Aventura, North Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Pompano Beach and West Palm Beach.

“Our crews are working to restore service safely and as quickly as possible,” Florida Power & Ligiht said in a statement. “We urge customers to monitor the weather and stay safe. This includes staying far away from downed power lines or other damaged electrical equipment.”
