A graduating high school senior from Southwest Miami-Dade was shot and killed Tuesday afternoon in what police describe as a suspected robbery.

Andrea Camps was member of the 2020 graduating class of Terra Environmental Research Institute, a magnet school in Southwest Miami-Dade with a focus on science, technology, engineering and math.

In a Twitter post Wednesday, the school confirmed Camps, whose age was not immediately known, was one of its students.

“The loss is immeasurable but so is the love left behind. Our TERRA Family is mourning the loss of Andrea Camps, a member of the Class of 2020. Please join us as we keep her friends and family in our prayers,” the post reads.

Miami-Dade Superintendent Alberto Carvalho also posted a message on Twitter about Camp’s death.

“Amidst the coronavirus crisis around us, kids are still falling victim to the murderous, cowardly gun violence in the streets of our community. Lower your protective mask, or leave it up, but speak up about what you know about the latest shooting of one of our kids,” he wrote.

Miami-Dade Detective Chris Thomas, a spokesman for the police department, said Camps and a male friend, who police did not identify, responded to an ad or post on social media selling shoes. They arranged to meet someone to buy the shoes, but the buy turned out to be a robbery, Thomas said.

They were both shot. Camps’ friend was wounded, but is expected to be released from the hospital this week. Camps, however, died in surgery, Thomas said. Police suspect the pair was ambushed.

“It appears to be, but the investigation is ongoing,” Thomas said.

Police found both victims inside a white Jeep on the side of the road on Southwest 112th Avenue near 248th Street early Tuesday afternoon.

Police are still looking for two men suspected of shooting Camps and her friend.
