Woman crossing Miami street killed in hit-and-run crash

A woman crossing a Miami street in a wheelchair Sunday morning was killed when a car slammed into her and then took off.

The hit-and-run crash happened at about 3 a.m. Sunday at Northwest Third Avenue and 54th Street.

The woman, identified as Takesha Shawanna Hayes, 39, was attempting to cross Northwest 54th Street when she was hit, police said. She died on the street.

Her family told Miami Herald news partner CBS 4 that Hayes, a mother of two, had multiple sclerosis and used a wheelchair to get around. She was going to meet her boyfriend when the car hit her, her family said.

“This is too much, I want my big sister back. Now she’s gone,” Kendra Broomfield told the station.

Police do not have a description of the car, which likely has front-end damage.

Anyone with information on the case is asked to call the Miami Police Department’s Traffic Homicide Unit at 305-603-6525 or Miami-Dade Crimestoppers at 305-471-8477 (TIPS).
