2-year-old boy drowns in Plantation lake, police say; second drowning in a week
For the second time this week, a child drowned in a lake in Plantation, police said.
On Thursday, a 2-year-old boy went missing around 5:30 p.m. near the 1600 block of Northwest 108th Avenue. Police were called, and while officers were on their way, the boy’s family found him unresponsive in a lake behind their house, the department said.
Family members immediately removed him from the water and began CPR. Police officers took over the life-saving efforts until Plantation Fire Rescue paramedics arrived and took him to Broward Health Medical Center, where he died.
On Sunday morning, about two miles away, in the 500 block of Northwest 107th Avenue, a father found his 4-year-old daughter face down in a lake behind their house, police said.

He too performed CPR until paramedics arrived. The girl was pronounced dead at Broward Health, according to police.
Both drownings are under investigation, police said.
With its oceans, lakes, swimming pools and other waterways, drowning is the leading cause of death for children under 5 in Florida, according to the Department of Children and Families. In 2025, 119 children died from drowning in the state, and 80% were younger than 3 years old, DCF says.
