An 8-year-old boy who was attacked by two pit bulls inside his Margate home remained in the hospital Thursday following several surgeries, the city’s fire department said.

The dogs that attacked the child were turned over to the city by their owners and have been euthanized, said Lisa Huriash, spokeswoman for the city and its fire department.

The attack happened around 11 a.m. Wednesday at the home in the 5500 block of South Lakewood Circle.

Huriash said the dogs were at the house for less than a day. They belonged to a family member who lives elsewhare, she said.

Investigators are looking into the attack, Huriash said.

Paramedics with Broward Sheriff’s Office Fire Rescue flew the boy, who has not been named, to Broward Health in Fort Lauderdale, where he underwent multiple surgeries Wednesday. Doctors scheduled another surgery for Friday, Huriash said.

According to the Margate Fire Department, there “is no immediate timeframe” for the boy’s discharge from the hospital.
