How to renew your car registration at Publix and what to know about expansion
Renewing your car’s registration and auto tag is now as easy as ordering your lunchtime Pub Sub.
The rollout to install self-service kiosks inside Publix supermarkets allows drivers to avoid the crowds and waiting at traditional auto tag offices, which remain open and an option. The supermarket mobile effort began in April at several Miami-Dade Publix stores.
As of July 31, there are 82 Publix locations with Florida MV Express kiosks across Florida, Geogia and South Carolina, according to supermarket spokeswoman Lindsey Willis.
The kiosk trend, which started with five Publix stores from Homestead to Miami Beach to Doral, has picked up speed and new locations are coming soon.
Broward’s plans for movile renewal kiosks at Publix
The Broward County Tax Collector’s office said it plans to place up to 10 kiosks at Publix stores in coming months, according to an email Thursday from communications director Nicole Murad Scarcella at the office of Abbey Ajayi, Broward County’s tax collector.
Scarcella said Broward is working with the self-service kiosk vendor, ITI, and Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles to place these kiosks.
“Kiosks will allow residents to renew their vehicle registration with the click of a few buttons and are another fast and easy option for renewals,” Scarcella said.
Miami Beach satellite office
In addition, the Miami Beach City Commission unanimously approved a new satellite tax collector’s office to open in commercial space at the city-owned Anchor Shops and Garage at 100 16th St.
The new Miami-Dade County Tax Collector’s Office would open by the end of the year commissioners said at a July 23 meeting, according to Miami Beach spokeswoman Melissa Berthier. The coming office would be about 4,000 square feet with parking.
“People can renew driver’s licenses, pay taxes, get business licenses and register vehicles — without having to leave the island,” sponsor and Miami Beach Commissioner Alex Fernandez said in a statement.
The new Miami Beach full-service office brings a broader range of county services than the Publix kiosks offer. The Publix self-serve kiosks are currently designed for auto tag renewals and not driver’s license renewals at this time, said spokeswoman Willis. There is a participating Publix with a kiosk at the West Avenue store since April.
The satellite Beach office would be a standalone office and process, among other services, driver’s licenses, property tax payments, business licenses and applications for hunting or fishing licenses.
“We’re cutting out long drives, reducing wait times, and putting residents first by making local government work better for them,” Miami Beach Mayor Steven Meiner said in a statement.
“This office was long overdue in the Miami Beach area,” said Miami-Dade County Tax Collector Dariel Fernández in a statement.
