A car was submerged in a Broward canal, and a person was found dead inside

A 27-year-old man was found dead inside a car completely submerged in a Tamarac canal Thursday morning, deputies said.

Sometime between midnight and 6:38 a.m., Lachtowiz Fernando Frazier was driving his Honda Civic through the parking lot of the Golf Villas apartment complex, near the 5900 block of Northwest 46th Avenue in Tamarac, the Broward County Sheriff’s Office said.

Frazier drove through a metal guardrail and over a small tree before his car plummeted into the canal near the complex, deputies said.

Around 8:20 a.m., a dive team found the car and Frazier inside.

Deputies say there was no witness to the crash and an investigation is ongoing as the cause of the crash is still unknown.

Frazier lived in Tamarac not far from the canal.

Frazier’s family started a GoFundMe page to pay for his funeral. The family is asking for $20,000 and as of early Friday afternoon the page has raised $5,450.

Lachtowiz Frazier, Frazier’s father, told CBS Miami that his son was studying to be a Spanish teacher at Broward College and worked at a gas station and for Uber as a driver.

“This makes no sense to me,” he said. “I wonder how this could have happened. I know my son. If he was tired, he would not have driven his car. He would have parked it. And I just can’t see how he could have fallen asleep in the short distance from this parking lot to this canal. How could he wind up over there? When I heard this it was like a dream. Now reality is settling in. My son has not been in any accidents. I know him. If he is tired, he is going to pull over and park.”

This is a developing story and will be updated as more is learned.
