A car was discovered in a Southwest Florida bay. Inside were a mother and son, cops say
A mother and son died Monday after their car plunged into Estero Bay, deputies say.
According to the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded Monday afternoon to the 26900 block of McLaughlin Boulevard in Bonita Springs on Florida’s southwest coast. There, they found a dark-colored vehicle “a distance from the shoreline” that was almost completely submerged.
First responders removed a 5-year-old boy from the vehicle who was taken to the hospital. He died later that evening, deputies say.
They also discovered a deceased 41-year-old woman.
The sheriff’s office later confirmed to WINK-TV that the two were in fact mother and son. Police did not identify them.
It’s unclear how the vehicle ended up in the bay. The investigation is ongoing.
“It’s not like they could be going at a high speed through here,” Carl Garner, who lives close to the bay, told WINK-TV. “... It seems unusual that would happen.”
