Police release footage of head-on crash that led to a suspect shooting at an officer

New video footage shows the crash in Davie that led to a man shooting at an officer, according to police.

Davie police on Friday released the video of the collision that involved Odane Wellington, 25, whom they later arrested on numerous charges including attempted murder of a law enforcement officer, kidnapping and resisting arrest.

The footage begins with a police car turning onto State Road 7 just after 2 a.m. Tuesday. A Mercedes Benz sedan driving fast in the opposite direction with its headlights off zoomed by the officer, who quickly made a U-turn, according to police.

Wellington, who law enforcement later learned was driving the Mercedes, then sped off, his arrest report says. The video shows sparks coming from underneath his sedan as he approached Griffin Road, ran a red turn arrow and collided head-on with another vehicle.

Officer Clint Burns arrived at the scene soon after the crash. Wellington got out of his car and fled toward the Happy Pappy Liquor store, firing two shots at Burns, who was following him, the report says.

Officers found Wellington in the back seat of a nearby car and took him into custody, the report continued. No one was injured.

Wellington is being held without bail in Broward County, according to jail records. Police said they expect to file additional charges.

Court documents show Wellington had been previously convicted of grand theft, burglary and was currently on probation for a separate burglary.
