Ninth water main break plagues Fort Lauderdale. A boil water notice is in effect
Fort Lauderdale is doing emergency work on yet another water main break Saturday afternoon. A boil water notice remained in effect on Sunday evening.
City workers are repairing a break in a submerged 16-inch water line in the south fork of the New River in the area of Southwest Seventh Street. This is the ninth water main or sewer break in Fort Lauderdale since the beginning of December.
City officials said the break appeared to be on the side of the pipe, which is about 33 feet deep in the middle of the riverbed. They expect to replace the damaged water main with a new pipe section on Monday.
Residents living in the Coconut Drive area, the River Reach Condominiums and parts of the Riverside Park neighborhood have reported service interruptions, the city said.
On Sunday afternoon, divers continued to excavate sand and sediment around the damaged area. Residents of the Tarpon River and Riverside Park neighborhoods could see low pressure and water interruptions.
The city has issued a precautionary boil water notice for the area. The boundaries are:
▪ The north fork of the New River
▪ Davie Boulevard
▪ Tarpon River up to and including Southwest Seventh Street and the south fork of the New River
▪ Southwest 15th Avenue
Residents are being advised to boil all water that is being used for drinking, cooking, making ice, brushing teeth and washing dishes for at least one minute.
After the repair is completed, the notice will stay in effect for two days after the water has passed a safety test.
