A 15-year-old cyclist tried to hitch a ride onto a truck. That move proved fatal, cops say.
A 15-year-old bicyclist was killed Sunday after he collided with a truck, according to the Broward County Sheriff’s Office.
Lasvillie Edwards Jr. was seen biking in the left thru lane of North State Road 7 in Tamarac at roughly 2:40 p.m. After an abrupt shift to the right thru lane, deputies say he grabbed hold of a handle on the 2016 Freightliner truck’s passenger side as if hitching a ride.
The truck driver, 57-year-old Earl Hayes, turned at Northwest 49th Street, which caused Edwards to lose control. Edwards then ran into the passenger side and rolled under the truck, causing his death, according to BSO.
Investigators say Hayes stayed at the scene and worked with detectives. BSO spokesperson Don Prichard said there are no pending charges against Hayes at this time.
BSO traffic homicide detectives are investigating.
A search of Hayes’ driving record yielded only two previous convictions, both for failure to wear a seat belt, in 2010 and 2016.
