BSO: Driver who crashed into a gas pump was going driving at a ‘high rate of speed’
The Broward Sheriff's Office released more details Wednesday about a fiery wreck at a Dania Beach gas station that left a teenager dead and closed busy Federal Highway for hours as detectives investigated.
According to BSO, Jose Romero, 18, was driving a Mustang convertible “at an extremely high rate of speed” at about 9 p.m. Tuesday when he lost control after driving over a speed hump. The car left the road, and slammed into the fuel pumps at the BP station, 701 S. Federal Hwy.
The car, which was wedged on its side between the pumps, burst into flames. People tried to help Romero to no avail, according to BSO.
The crash sheered off the pump and sent car parts into the street, Mike Jachles, a spokesman for Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue said Tuesday night. Federal Highway was closed during the investigation.
On Wednesday, BSO said it was waiting for the Broward County Medical Examiner’s Office to determine the cause of Romero’s death.
The Broward Sheriff Fire Marshal’s Bureau and Florida Bureau of Fire and Arson Investigations are investigating.
