How South Florida called for an end to police brutality during a week of demonstrations

They have taken to the streets by the thousands to demand an end to injustice and police brutality following the death of George Floyd after he was restrained by Minneapolis police officers.

Floyd, 46, died May 25 after one of the officers, Derek Chauvin, pressed his knee into Floyd’s neck for nearly nine minutes even after he stopped moving and gasped for air. The death has set off demonstrations across the United States — from Miami to Portland, Oregon, — and around the world as citizens call for an end to heavy-handed police tactics.

As Floyd’s family and friends prepare to lay him to rest in his hometown of Houston, the global movement has given breath and breadth to his final words as he lay on the ground with an officer’s knee on his neck: “I can’t breathe.”

But even as violence and destruction erupted in multiple locations, many of the protests — including those in South Florida — have been largely peaceful. These are some of the images captured by Miami Herald and el Nuevo Herald visual journalists.
