Two years after a reprimand and fine in a Brazilian butt-lift death, a Miami plastic surgeon has been hit with a state complaint about his actions after another BBL.
The administrative complaint against Dr. Oliver Simmons was filed Jan. 3 and concerns a 2023 surgery while Simmons was at New Life Plastic Surgery, 8400 SW Eighth St. At one point in 2023, liposuction deaths darkened the records of three of the eight surgeons on New Life’s website.

Florida Department of Health administrative complaints start the professional discipline process. For a doctor, the process can end with exoneration or action by the Board of Medicine.
Between coming out of the University of South Carolina in 1998 and the April 2022 death of Tanisha Walker, Simmons owned a clean discipline record in Florida and South Carolina, where he was licensed until it lapsed in 2021. Simmons is board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Otolalyngology (head and neck surgery).
His plastic surgery board certification had been on probation after Walker’s death from a pulmonary embolism that the Department of Health charged was caused by Simmons illegally injecting fat into Walker’s gluteal muscles. The Board of Medicine gave Simmons a reprimand; fined him $10,000; charged him the maximum $9,588.76 in reimbursement costs; ordered to give a one-hour lecture on safety and possible complications of BBL surgeries; and required to use ultrasound guidance during his BBLs for six months after the final order.

The current complaint
That final order came down March 6, 2023. Three months and a day later, a 32-year-old woman came into New Life for a Brazilian butt lift. As is normal, New Life discharged her the same day.
The next day, the complaint said, the patient showed up at Jackson West in Doral complaining of “severe abdominal pain and oozing from her liposuction access sites.” She was sent back to the recovery center housing her with pain and nausea medications.
The complaint alleges Simmons fell short of standard of care when he didn’t:
▪ “Provide postoperative prescriptions or instructions for postoperative pain medications.”
▪ “Timely schedule postoperative follow-up appointments” for the patient.
▪ “Conduct any postoperative assessment, monitor patient progress or established an adequate plan of care after the procedure.”
▪ “Document the patient’s postoperative course, postoperative appearance or a plan of future care.”
Simmons didn’t answer an email from the Miami Herald about the current complaint. He now operates on female patients at Miami’s Beautyland.
