Florida COVID update: New county case, death tolls as 12,915 more cases reported statewide
Florida reported 12,915 COVID-19 cases and no new deaths Monday, according to Tuesday’s report to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, based on Miami Herald calculations of CDC data.
This is the largest single-day increase of newly reported cases since Sept. 10, when 17,854 were reported. Earlier this fall, daily new cases reached over 15,000 during the delta virus’ record-breaking days, according to Herald calculations.
The Florida Department of Health will most likely add deaths to Monday’s total. The state has done this in the past when it has added cases and deaths to previous days during the pandemic.
In all, Florida has recorded at least 3,739,439 confirmed COVID cases and 62,264 deaths.
In the past seven days, as the omicron version of the virus circulates, the state has added 27 deaths and 8,474 cases per day on average, according to Herald calculations of CDC data. That rolling seven-day case average is the highest it’s been since Sept. 22, when it was at 9,020.
COVID cases and deaths in South Florida and Manatee County
The CDC’s Community Profile Report released county-level case and death data for Florida’s 67 counties.
It is unclear when these newly reported cases and deaths occurred. The Community Profile Report updates Florida’s county tolls and rates about once every seven days, when or after the COVID-19 weekly situation report is published by the Florida Department of Health on Fridays.
As of Monday’s Community Profile Report, Florida had a rate of 290 cumulative deaths per 100,000 people since the start of the pandemic. Two weeks ago, the state had a rate of 288 deaths per 100,000 people.
The had a case rate of 17,537 cumulative cases per 100,000 people since the start of the pandemic. Two weeks ago, the state had a case rate of 17,246.
Here’s where case and death rates and tolls stand in South Florida and Manatee County, according to the CDC.
▪ Miami-Dade County’s death toll is 9,234, an increase of 26 deaths from Friday’s report. That’s a rate of 340 cumulative deaths per 100,000 people since the beginning of the pandemic.
The county’s case toll is 702,309, an increase of 11,543. That’s a rate of 25,849 cumulative cases per 100,000 people.
▪ Broward County’s death toll sits at 4,966, an increase of nine deaths. That’s a rate of 254 cumulative deaths per 100,000 people since the beginning of the pandemic.
The county’s case toll is 370,708, an increase of 4,705. That’s a rate of 18,984 cumulative cases per 100,000 people.
▪ Palm Beach County’s death toll remains at 4,316, no increase. That’s a rate of 288 cumulative deaths per 100,000 people since the beginning of the pandemic.
The county’s case toll is 234,311, an increase of 2,384. That’s a rate of 15,654 cumulative cases per 100,000 people.
▪ Monroe County’s death toll still sits at 99, an increase of one. The county would be at a death rate of 133 deaths per 100,000 people if its population were that large.
The county’s case toll is 11,444, an increase of 105. That’s a rate of 15,417 cumulative cases per 100,000 people.
▪ Manatee County’s death toll sits at 1,225, an increase of five. Manatee has a rate of 304 cumulative deaths per 100,000 people since the beginning of the pandemic.
The county’s case toll is 66,931, an increase of 228. That’s a rate of 16,598 cumulative cases per 100,000 people.
FLORIDA COVID VACCINE RATES
About 13,517,297 eligible Floridians — 62.9% of the state’s population — have completed the two-dose series of either the Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna vaccines or have completed Johnson & Johnson’s single-dose vaccine, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
VACCINATIONS IN SOUTH FLORIDA AND MANATEE COUNTY
Here’s how many people have been fully vaccinated in South Florida and Manatee County, according to the CDC.
▪ In Miami-Dade County, about 2,169,979 people, or 79.9% of the county’s total population, are fully vaccinated.
▪ In Broward County, about 1,312,244 people are fully vaccinated, or 67.2% of the county’s population.
▪ In Palm Beach County, about 942,307 people are fully vaccinated, or 63% of the county’s population.
▪ In Monroe County, about 55,081 people are fully vaccinated, or 74.2% of the county’s population.
▪ In Manatee County, about 236,445 people are fully vaccinated, or 58.6% of the county’s population.
COVID-19 hospitalizations in Florida
There were 1,643 people hospitalized for COVID-19 in Florida, according to the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services report on Tuesday. This data is reported from 234 Florida hospitals. That number is 129 more people than in Monday’s report, when 262 hospitals reported but not necessarily the same hospitals.
COVID-19 patients take up 3.06% of patient beds, compared to 2.65% in the previous day’s reporting hospitals.
Of the people hospitalized in Florida, 287 were in intensive care unit beds, a decrease of six. That represents about 4.69% of the state’s ICU hospital beds, compared to 4.76% the previous day.
Tuesday’s Miami-Dade County report said there were 327 COVID patients in the county’s hospitals on Monday, an increase of 48 from the previous day. Of the 101 new COVID patients, 75 (74.26%) had not been vaccinated. Intensive care patients numbered 44, a rise of nine from the previous day.
Broward County’s Tuesday report said there were 229 COVID patients in the county’s hospitals, a increase of 35 from the previous day’s report.
