Florida COVID update: Largest single-day increase since August as 20,194 more cases reported

Florida saw 20,194 COVID-19 cases Tuesday, according to Miami Herald calculations of state data reported Wednesday to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control.

This is the largest single-day increase of newly reported cases since Aug. 28, when 21,189 were reported. Cases have now reached the record-breaking days of the delta variant in August — when more than 20,000 new daily cases were reported several times, according to Herald calculations.

No new deaths were reported for Tuesday — though it is likely the Florida Department of Health will add deaths to Tuesday’s total. The state has done this in the past when it has added cases and deaths to previous days during the pandemic.

In all, Florida has recorded at least 3,799,661 confirmed COVID cases and 62,264 deaths.

In the past seven days, as the omicron version of the virus has circulated, the state has added 27 deaths and 10,770 cases per day on average, according to Herald calculations of CDC data. That rolling seven-day case average is the highest it’s been since Sept. 18, when it was at 10,971.

FLORIDA COVID VACCINE RATES

About 13,527,757 eligible Floridians — 63% of the state’s population — have completed the two-dose series of either the Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna vaccines or have completed Johnson & Johnson’s single-dose vaccine, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

VACCINATIONS IN SOUTH FLORIDA AND MANATEE COUNTY

Here’s how many people have been fully vaccinated in South Florida and Manatee County, according to the CDC.

In Miami-Dade County, about 2,171,620 people, or 80% of the county’s total population, are fully vaccinated.

In Broward County, about 1,313,406 people are fully vaccinated, or 67% of the county’s population.

In Palm Beach County, about 942,935 people are fully vaccinated, or 63% of the county’s population.

In Monroe County, about 55,104 people are fully vaccinated, or 74% of the county’s population.

In Manatee County, about 236,633 people are fully vaccinated, or 59% of the county’s population.

COVID-19 hospitalizations in Florida

There were 1,849 people hospitalized for COVID-19 in Florida, according to the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services report on Wednesday. That is 206 more people hospitalized than in Tuesday’s report, when 234 hospitals reported but not necessarily the same hospitals. Wednesday’s hospitalization data was reported from 230 Florida hospitals.

COVID-19 patients now take up 3.41% of patient beds, compared to 3.06% in the previous day’s reporting hospitals.

Of the people hospitalized in Florida, 314 were in intensive care unit beds, an increase of 27. That represents about 5.06% of the state’s ICU hospital beds, compared to 4.69% the previous day.

Wednesday’s Miami-Dade County report said there were 327 COVID patients in the county’s hospitals on Tuesday, an increase of 48 from the previous day. Of the 120 new COVID patients, 86 (71.67%) had not been vaccinated. Intensive care patients numbered 30, a decline of 14 from the previous day.
