Mayors warn that coronavirus doesn’t take Labor Day off; curfew remains in effect
5:45 p.m.: Last week, Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez and Broward Mayor Dale Holness urged people to not let their guard down over the holiday weekend. The elected officials credited the decreasing positivity rate with people’s adherence to social distancing and other pandemic restrictions.
Gimenez told the press the weekend would be a test, and officials would have zero tolerance for those not following new normal rules.
“This is not over yet,” he said in a press conference Friday. “We have a big test coming for this Labor Day Weekend, and we do not want a repeat of Memorial Day Weekend, when people were not complacent and we received reports of crowds partying.”
Miami-Dade County’s 10 p.m. - 6 a.m. curfew remains in effect — a reminder that lit up on locals’ cell phones Saturday night as an emergency alert. Facial coverings are required in public, and gatherings of more than 10 people are prohibited. Gimenez warned people not to have house parties, which have been blamed for contributing to an increase in COVID-19 infections earlier in the summer.
On Friday, Holness said county residents can’t “squander the good work that we have done to this point to get us to where we are.” In Broward, facial coverings are required when social distancing is not possible, and organized sports are prohibited.
