Florida surpasses 12,000 COVID-19 deaths as daily confirmed cases fall to 2,564
The Florida Department of Health’s COVID-19 dashboard reported 2,564 new cases and 38 new deaths, the latter number putting the state’s pandemic death toll at 12,001.
Sunday’s case count breaks the run of three days back over 3,000 cases although its in line with last Sunday’s total of 2,583. Because of differences in data collection and entry, Sunday case counts have tended to be lower throughout the pandemic.
The state’s average daily positive test rate for the last seven reported days is 5.66%, a whisper’s difference from the 5.71% of the previous seven days.
South Florida Counties
▪ Miami-Dade added 345 cases and five deaths, bringing its state-high pandemic totals to 161,363 and 2,655, respectively. The average daily positive rate for the most recent seven days was 6.75%, although that includes Tuesday’s 9.55%, affected by the massive Quest Diagnostics data dump of test results. The state claims without that dump, Tuesday’s percentage would’ve been 7.92%. That would take the average daily positive rate down to 6.52%.
That same average from the previous seven days was 7.87%.
Even with the Quest dump, Miami-Dade stretched its streak of consecutive days under a 10% positive rate to 19.
▪ Broward reported no deaths, just another 181 cases. The county has had 73,293 COVID-19 cases during the pandemic and 1,215 deaths. Saturday’s positive test rate, 3.86%, is the lowest in weeks. The average daily positive test rate dropped from 4.94% to 4.50%, and down to 4.30% using the state’s number for Tuesday outside the Quest dump.
▪ Palm Beach saw 162 more positive tests and four deaths, raising its total cases to 43,067 and death toll to 1,166. The average daily positive rate dropped almost a full percent, 4.72% to 3.79%, and down to 3.66% when factoring in the state’s estimate of the Quest dump effect.
▪ There were six more cases in Monroe County (1,764) and no more deaths (16).
Current Hospitalizations
According to the state’s Agency for Health Care Administration 11:45 a.m. Sunday update, 3,163 people are hospitalized with a primary diagnosis of COVID-19, a reduction of 81 from the Saturday 11:30 a.m. count.
Three South Florida counties saw reductions: Miami-Dade by 33 to 547; Broward by 14 to 350; Palm Beach by three to 175. Monroe County remained the same, at two.
Florida’s current hospitalization data does not always match the hospitalization data reported in Miami-Dade’s New Normal dashboard. Officials say this could be for a number of reasons including the frequency of daily updates.
Miami-Dade’s count of its current hospitalizations is 651, the 13th consecutive day that metric has fallen.
Testing
The state reported anohter 20,947 people have been tested, raising that total to 4,791,823. Of those people tested, 13.5% have tested positive.
