Florida’s number of confirmed new COVID-19 cases exceeds 2,000 for second day in a row

Sunday, Florida halted its three-day run of single-day highs for positive COVID-19 cases reported and the day’s positive test rate slid down toward the overall positive test rate.

Still, the 2,016 confirmed new novel coronavirus cases in Sunday’s update represented the second-largest single day total for the state. South Florida accounted for 740 of the new cases (36.7%), but four of the six new deaths.

The percentage of people who tested positive for the first time was 4.46% in Sunday’s update, the lowest in four days and the day after a June high of 6.21%.

Florida has had 75,568 COVID-19 cases with 2,931 deaths and an overall positive test rate of 5.4%.

South Florida by county

Miami-Dade added 284 new cases and three deaths, pushing the state-high totals to 21,917 and 825, respectively. Miami-Dade’s overall positive test rate is down to 9.3%, but according to Miami-Dade’s latest New Normal Dashboard, which posted Sunday afternoon, the average of the previous 14 days is 7.37%.

The Miami-Dade dashboard also showed 584 currently hospitalized patients, down from 591 and 601 of Monday and Tuesday, but the second consecutive day with a sharp rise: 23 to 569 on Saturday and another 15 on Sunday.

Another 64 cases in Broward County brought its overall number to 8,928 with an overall positive test rate of 6.3%. After the daily rates were in the 5% or 6% range all week, Saturday dropped to 2.7%, according to the state’s report. There were no deaths, leaving that number at 357.

Palm Beach had South Florida’s largest jump in cases during Sunday’s update, 391, and there was one death, pushing its totals to 8,833 and 426, respectively. The most recent daily positive percentage, 8.3%, came down from the previous four days’ percentages (9.6, 10.6, 8.5, 10.3) but remained well above the last day before that run (7.0%) or exactly one week previous (5.0%).

Monroe County reported one new case, bringing its total to 129, and no new deaths, leaving its total at four.

Testing

The recommended number of daily tests needed varies among experts, but the dean of the University of South Florida’s College of Medicine told the governor that Florida needs to test about 33,000 people every day. The last few days, the state has been over that mark, including the 50,406 reported in Sunday’s update.

Of the 1,409,922 people tested in Florida, 5.36% have tested positive. Another 1,184 people are awaiting results.
