Coronavirus live updates: Here’s what to know in South Florida on May 10

NAPLES CLOSES BEACHES ONE WEEK AFTER REOPENING

5 p.m.: Naples closed its beaches Sunday, one week after they reopened, because officials said visitors were not practicing social distancing amid the coronavirus pandemic.

FLORIDA’S UPDATED CASE NUMBERS

2:30 p.m.: Sunday afternoon’s update said 316 of Florida’s 595 new novel coronavirus cases came from Miami-Dade, Broward, Palm Beach and Monroe counties. Five of the six deaths came from the region, also, although all of those were in Miami-Dade.

The state now has 40,596 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 1,721 deaths.

COVID-19 Cases in Florida

THE HEAT CAN OFFICIALLY USE ITS PRACTICE FACILITY

10:20 a.m.: Gyms remain closed officially in Miami-Dade except for one: the Miami Heat practice facility at AmericanAirlines Arena.

An amendment to Miami-Dade County Emergency Order 15-20, which closed gyms, pools, hot tubs to slow the spread of the novel coronavirus, allows “the use of facilities owned or leased by a professional sports franchise, solely by employees of such franchise for training purposes.”

This exception went into effect Friday at 6 p.m. The Heat plans to begin voluntary individual workouts Wednesday at the earliest.

SOUTH FLORIDA LAWSUIT ACCUSES CHINA OF CORONAVIRUS COVER-UP

9:40 a.m.: Worried about her future, flight attendant Jessica Merritt recently decided to join a growing South Florida class-action lawsuit that accuses the People’s Republic of China of knowing about the danger of the coronavirus in December, covering up its rapid spread by Chinese traveling to other countries through January, and ultimately causing the loss of tens of millions of jobs and the deaths of at least 78,000 Americans — a number likely to continue growing for months.

Merritt, a Boca Raton 30-year-old, put her name on the suit along with dozens of other workers, healthcare professionals and business people from here, New York and other parts of the country. The South Florida native believes that if China had warned the world early on about the deadly virus that originated in the city of Wuhan, the United States could have been better prepared to contain its spread and devastation.
