2 South Beach supermarket workers test positive for coronavirus after a manager did

Twelve days after a manager at the Miami Beach Trader Joe’s tested positive for COVID-19, two workers at the South Beach store learned they also have the novel coronavirus, the chain confirmed.

“They had not been in the store for several days,” Trader Joe’s spokesperson Kenya Friend-Daniel emailed. “We worked with local and state health officials to determine the best measures. The store received a deep cleaning overnight and reopened this morning.”

An employee identified to the Miami Herald as a manager by two Trader Joe’s employees tested positive on March 28. Staff was told the next day. One Trader Joe’s worker forwarded screen shots of what the worker said was a March 29 email from the manager.

In the email, the manager says “I went home the moment I started to feel something coming on Tuesday, the 24th. I thankfully did not exhibit any symptoms while at work.

“We are fortunate that we did not have to close our store or do any additional cleaning than we are already doing because my symptoms began much later that evening.”

Last week, after the above case and a South Beach Publix employee tested positive, Miami Beach told grocers to cut capacity by half. The city later became the first municipality to require face covering of customers and staff in grocery stores, pharmacies and restaurants.
