The novel coronavirus has infected a South Beach supermarket employee

An employee at the Miami Beach Trader Joe’s received a positive COVID-19 test Saturday, the chain confirmed.

A Trader Joe’s spokesperson said the employee hadn’t been in the store for five days to a week.

An employee at the South Beach location, 17th Street and West Avenue, said the store receives deep cleanings every morning and evening, the latter even earlier after the store moved closing time up to 7 p.m. two weeks ago.

A Trader Joe’s New York location was closed for cleaning after an employee who had been in the store just the day before tested positive with COVID-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus. A company spokesperson said local and state officials didn’t believe that was necessary in this situation.

Company policy stated on the chain’s website is that crew members will be paid for scheduled shifts while the store is closed for extra cleaning.

Monday was the first day Trader Joe’s began using the first hour after opening for customers over 60, the most vulnerable to the worst effects of COVID-19, and movement-restricted customers who might need help while shopping.
