Disney’s Florida, California parks are closed until further notice. No opening date set
Three days after Universal Resort said it was extending the time its parks would be closed until mid-April, the Walt Disney Co. said Friday all of its parks will be closed until further notice.
When Disney closed its Florida parks earlier this month, it said the closure would run till March 31. But with Friday’s announcement that the closing would be extended, Disney did not give a specific reopening date.
Universal said Tuesday it would extend the closing of its parks to April 19.
The actions by the theme park companies come after Orange County Mayor Jerry Demings announced plans to sign a stay-at-home executive order on Tuesday. The order went into effect at 11 p.m. Thursday and will continue for two weeks.
“While there is still much uncertainty with respect to the impacts of COVID-19, the safety and well-being of our guests and employees remains The Walt Disney Company’s top priority,” Disney said in a statement.
Disney also said it will extend paying its hourly parks and resorts cast members through April 18. The company did not specify if it will continue paying employees past that date.
The company also sent an email to its Florida-based cast members telling them of the Orange County stay-at-home order and advising workers to stay at home until April 9 to comply with the law.
As of Friday morning, there were 2,900 confirmed COVID-19 cases in Florida.
