University of Miami confirms student tested positive for coronavirus
The University of Miami on Saturday notified students and staff of a student with a confirmed case of COVID-19, the respiratory illness caused by the novel coronavirus.
The university says a student from its main Coral Gables campus has tested positive for the virus. According to a university-wide email, the student “lives off campus, has been in self-isolation, and is in good condition.”
The email said public health officials are directly contacting people known to have been in close contact with the student to provide information and guidance.
In the email, the university said it declined to give further information about individual cases.
On Tuesday, UM confirmed that a member of its medical campus community tested presumptive positive for COVID-19. The university said the person is in good condition and is self-isolating to prevent the spread of infection.
All classes at the university have been shifted online. Employees are able to work remotely, and students are being encouraged to return home if they are staying on-campus as some housing will close on March 25.
