South Florida brokers and developers have speculated that the World Cup would kick off a real-estate buying frenzy in Miami.

While the World Cup bump doesn’t seem to have been as dramatic as predicted, one big-name in soccer star dropped $8.7 million on a Miami-Dade condo last month, according to public records.

Retired Brazilian soccer legend Ricardo Izecson dos Santos Leite, better known by the nickname Kaká, bought a three-bedroom, 3,345-square-foot condo in Bal Harbour. Kaká, who played on Brazil’s victorious 2002 World Cup squad, is considered one of the greatest players of all time.

His new condo in the building Oceana Bal Harbour was listed in January for $9.5 million, according to the local multiple listing service. The 14th-floor unit has east- and west-facing balconies with views of the Atlantic Ocean and Biscayne Bay. Oceana is a 24-story building with 226 units that was completed in 2016.

Michael Martinez of ONE Sotheby’s International Realty represented the seller, and Jennifer Olmeda with WRA Real Estate Solutions LLC represented the seller.

According to Miami-Dade property records, the previous owner of the unit was Gaston Siciliano, who purchased the unit for $6.5 million in 2022.

Kaká, now 44, got his start at 18 with the Brazilian club São Paulo, before playing for AC Milan and Real Madrid. He finished his club career in Florida, playing for the Major League Soccer team Orlando City SC until his retirement in 2017. The attacking midfielder played on Brazil’s World Cup teams in 2002, 2006 and 2010.

Kaká is far from the first soccer star to buy real estate in South Florida. Earlier this year, another member of the 2002 World Cup-winning Brazilian team, Ronaldo Nazário, bought a condo not far from Kaká’s new place. Ronaldo spent $8 million on a waterfront penthouse in Bay Harbor Islands.

Inter Miami star Lionel Messi, whose Argentine national team will face off against Switzerland in the World Cup quarterfinals on Saturday, bought a $10.8 million home in Fort Lauderdale’s Bay Colony neighborhood in 2023. Inter Miami president and co-owner David Beckham owns an $80 million waterfront estate on North Bay Road in Miami Beach.
