Mover’s Spotlight

Name: Saima Chaudhry

New position: Chaudhry, an M.D., will be vice president for academic affairs and chief academic officer for graduate medical education programs at Memorial Healthcare System, one of the largest public healthcare systems in the country. The move follows Memorial’s initial institutional accreditation from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. Her attention is currently centered on pursuing accreditation for the following residency programs: physical medicine and rehabilitation, internal medicine and pediatrics.

From: Professor of medicine at Hofstra-North Shore LIJ School of Medicine. There, she developed curricula for the new medical school. She also worked for North Shore-LIJ Health System in New York and was vice chair for education in the Department of Medicine. She also has held several other leadership positions within the healthcare system.

Best advice she ever received: It’s more about learning than teaching, so focus on what the learner needs and not merely what the teacher should do. By the time one gets to the college level, the balance should shift towards a more self-directed mode of learning, which is what adult learning theory tells us should be applied to education. This is particularly true in medical education.
