A bankrupt firm is closing all its Florida furniture stores. Pets, vitamins safe for now

Furniture store American Freight is closing all of its 328 locations in the U.S., including its 33 Florida stores, as a part of Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings by its parent company Franchise Group.

The bankruptcy proceedings began on Nov. 3. The Delaware-based Franchise Group announced the closings on Wednesday but did not release a final date.

All of the stores, including four in South Florida in Hialeah, Medley, Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach, are offering closing sales in store and on its website. Markdowns of 30% on living room sets, bedroom furniture, dining tables, and scratch and dent and new in-box refrigerators, washers and dryers are included among sale items.

“Our goal is to deliver outstanding value to customers during this full chain closing sale,” Ian Fredericks, CEO of Hilco Consumer-Retail said in a statement. Hilco is managing the final sales. “Everything is on sale and must be sold, and we recommend shopping early for the best selection.”

Franchise Group’s other holdings, including The Vitamin Shoppe, Pet Supplies Plus and Buddy’s Home Furnishings, will stay in business.

“Today’s announcement to de-lever our balance sheet is a pivotal step forward in enabling our market-leading businesses Pet Supplies Plus, The Vitamin Shoppe and Buddy’s Home Furnishings to realize their full potential,” Andrew Laurence, Franchise Group’s president and CEO, said in a statement.

Franchise Group also cited “sustained inflation and macroeconomic challenges facing the large durable goods sector” as a reason for the shuttering of the American Freight stores, USA Today reported.

American Freight operates in 41 states and opened its first store in Ohio in 1994.
