Things To Do

Is there anything to do in Miami this weekend? Here’s what is open and closed

The New August is here! You know, that wonderfully sweaty time of year where we watch the tropical weather reports nervously, send the kids back to school in their bedrooms and order takeout from our favorite restaurants and pray they don’t shut down.

You can leave the house, of course. Restaurants are open for outdoor dining or takeout; maybe this is the time to try the lechon tacos at Caja Caliente in Coral Gables, which are the best tacos in Florida according to a new survey.

Or you could try one of the new restaurants that opened during the COVID-19 pandemic, like Chef Adrianne Calvo’s Red Fish. She also reopened Chef Adrianne’s at a new location at the Town & Country Mall in Kendall.

Here are the other things you can and can’t do in Miami on the weekend of Aug. 21-23. When you’re making plans, remember Miami-Dade County has a daily curfew from 10 p.m.-6 a.m.

Masks are mandatory in Miami-Dade County with a few exceptions; if you’re caught without one, you could be fined.

SPECIAL EVENTS

Running through Aug. 23: Miami Swim Week, which is virtual this year. The fashion shows will be held at the SLS South Beach Miami.

RESTAURANTS

Restaurants are open for outdoor dining, takeout or delivery under Miami-Dade County’s latest COVID-19 restrictions. Some restaurants have closed temporarily during the COVID-19 outbreak, while others have closed for good. Still others have dramatically changed their menus to better serve takeout customers.

BARS

Bars are closed unless they have a food license. If they do have a license, they can only serve drinks outdoors and must abide by the Miami-Dade County curfew.

NIGHTCLUBS

Nightclubs are still closed under county rules.

BEACHES

County beaches are open.

MOVIE THEATERS

Movie theaters are still closed in Miami-Dade County, but two AMC cinemas are opening Aug. 20 in Broward, one in Fort Lauderdale and the other in Pembroke Pines. Both will operate with new COVID-19 restrictions. A few pop drive-in movie theaters remain open, including a drive-in at the Miami Youth Fairgrounds, which is showing “Grease” and “Shrek” this weekend. The Hard Rock Stadium Fountain Open Air Plaza theater is also open this weekend, with “Goldfinger” on Aug. 20 and “Spy Kids” and “Shazam” on the weekend; “Goldfinger” is free for health-care workers and their families.

COUNTY AND CITY PARKS

All Miami-Dade parks are open, and so are marinas and golf courses. Note: Miami Beach has closed all basketball courts in city parks. Basketball rims have been removed.

BISCAYNE NATIONAL PARK

The park is open and has started up a new Group Snorkel Experience that makes it easier to maintain social distancing while snorkeling the reef, mangroves or even a shipwreck. Trips are four hours and capped at six people; book a trip here.
