Tiny plates, big plates: This new Wynwood restaurant suggests you try them all
The aim is in the name: Picoteo, a new restaurant in Wynwood, is about nibbling. Trying. Tasting. Ordering a variety of different items and (hopefully) enjoying them all.
The restaurant’s emphasis is on sharing, although not all of its plates are small. Some, in fact, are large. But you’re still supposed to let everyone at the table get a taste.
Expect to order plates of every size as you sample a variety of items from Europe, Latin America and the Mediterranean. Start with extra-small plates, which include bread, roasted mushrooms and olives and boquerones (anchovy).
Then take a step up: A bit larger, small plates include a snapper crudo with leche de Tigre, jalapeño and green apple and mushroom croquetas with truffle aioli and prosciutto. There’s a cucumber salad, too, with lemon yogurt, dill, red onion and cherry tomatoes, if you’re looking for something light.
On the large plates, you’ll find hearty dishes like beef tenderloin with mashed potatoes and bucatini with cacio e pepe, Pecorino Romano and soy marinated egg and rigatoni with Arrabbiata sauce, Calabrian chili and basil.
Picoteo also features a 16-seat bar, where you can enjoy a daily happy hour from 5-7 p.m. or order dinner, whatever you might want.
The cocktail program includes specialty drinks like the Velvet Daiquiri (rum, lime, simple syrup and red wine) and the Dirty Chai Martini (vodka, espresso, coffee liqueur and chai). An old fashioned is transformed into the Coco Cask Old Fashioned, with coconut-washed bourbon, Demerara sugar and bitters.
