Roaches emerging from a rice cooker — and spotted by a state inspector — helped close a Miami area chain restaurant location for a few hours last week.

North Miami Beach’s Miami Grill, formerly Miami Subs, has been at the corner of Northeast 167th Street and Sixth Avenue for at least 35 years. But only Wednesday did this Miami Grill join “Wretched Restaurant Row” — the restaurants on or just off 167th Street/163rd Street between Interstate 95 and Biscayne Boulevard that have failed state inspection since December 2023.

Usually, those inspections involve rodents and bowls of rodent droppings. Though Miami Grill’s vermin lacked fur and tails, they did make the most spectacular appearance among the 11 violations, three of which were High Priority.

“Observed five live roaches coming out of the rice cooker by the back prep table ... two live roaches by the mop sink ... two live roaches on the wall next to walk-in cooler.”

As for the roach corpses, two were under a bun rack. More than five were under a dry storage rack. More than three were under the soda machine. Three were behind kitchen fryers. One was on the floor by the back prep table. Another one was by the ice cream reach-in freezer.

Over five flies hung out in the air by the mop sink. Another three were by the dry storage area.

Floors in the kitchen and the three-compartment sink area had standing water.

Clean containers on a drying rack weren’t set to air dry properly. That’s called “wet nesting.”

Miami Grill passed a same-day re-inspection to get back open.
