This Brickell hotel will be demolished. Here’s what’s happening to its popular restaurant
Its luxury home may be scheduled for demolition, but one of Miami’s favorite Peruvian restaurants has found a new space in Brickell.
The glamorous La Mar by Gaston Acurio, a Michelin Guide-recognized restaurant located at the Mandarin Oriental hotel on Brickell Key, will move to a new spot at 1451 South Miami Ave. The space is now under construction and expected to be ready at the end of 2025.
Acurio, who opened the first La Mar in Lima in 2005, said the new space, about a mile from the original, will be an updated version of the La Mar diners knew and loved. The new space will be designed by DesignAgency.
“It has been an incredible 10-plus years at the Mandarin Oriental, and now we are embracing the opportunity to refresh our look,” he said in a statement. “We’re excited to introduce a more modern take on our vision, where every dish, drink and design element is elevated.”
The Miami restaurant, which opened in 2014 and is helmed by Chef Diego Oka, is known for its ceviches, grilled anticuchos and other Florida seafood as well as its waterfront views of Biscayne Bay and the Miami skyline.
There are also locations in Buenos Aires, Santiago de Chile, Bogota, San Francisco, Doha, Dubai and most recently Bellevue, Washington. A new La Mar is scheduled to open in Madrid in 2025.
The Mandarin Oriental, one of 10 hotels in Miami-Dade County to earn a Michelin key in the French guide’s debut ratings of hotels in 2024, will close on May 31 and is scheduled to reopen in 2030, with two new resort and condo towers. The update will include a new Mandarin Oriental hotel and several new restaurants.
