70 rodent droppings. Live roaches. Wastewater backup. Issues at a Miami-Dade restaurant
A dry storage area infested with two kinds of vermin and wastewater coming up through the kitchen floor drain topped the list of reasons a North Miami-Dade restaurant was shut down Friday after a state inspection.
The inspector noted 16 violations, four of which were High Priority, at Nick Caribbean Restaurant, 14530 W. Dixie Hwy.

Most prominent among the High Priority violations were “approximately 70 rodent droppings on top of the shelves in dry storage room next to kitchen.”
Also on dry storage shelves: four live roaches. Another quintet of live and moving roaches were under a kitchen prep table.
Under that table, the inspector counted eight roach corpses. About 10 were on top of the water heater. A dozen lay legs up under shelves by the three-compartment sink.
Speaking of the three-compartment sink, “wastewater from the triple sink was backing up through the floor drain in the kitchen area.”

The hand-wash sink in the three-compartment area didn’t have soap, making it a hand-wetting sink. Neither the sink in the restroom nor the one in the kitchen possessed paper towels.
The oven could have used a date with Easy Off, being “soiled” with an “accumulation of black substance/grease/food debris.”
“No probe thermometer provided to measure the temperature of food products.” That’s a basic restaurant food safety tool.
Nick Caribbean passed re-inspection on Saturday.
