Publix and Aldi store brands among more meat pack recalls on salmonella concerns

Nine brands of charcuterie meats with coppa, including Publix and Aldi’s store brands, have been recalled by Fratelli Beretta because they “may be under processed, which may have resulted in possible contamination with foodborne pathogens.”

That’s from the USDA’s recall notice, which indicates the pathogen would be salmonella. Fratelli Beretta pulled charcuterie meats in January after a USDA and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention investigation linked the meats to a salmonella outbreak.

The USDA’s Food Safety Inspection Service “collected unopened ready-to-eat coppa product as part of the investigation, which tested positive for salmonella, but that product was not released into commerce,” the USDA said. “After further investigation, FSIS determined that the product subject to the recall may be under processed.

“Further testing is ongoing to determine if the product sample that tested positive for salmonella is related to the outbreak.”

Salmonella outbreak update

Thursday’s update from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said the outbreak is now up to 87 counted cases reaching 30 states. Of the 87, there have been 18 known hospitalizations and no deaths.

Health care officials talked to 46 people in the outbreak, 36 of which said they ate some kind of charcuterie meat. Of that group, 23 remembered what kind of meat or had shopping records. Nineteen of those people ate charcuterie meat brands made by Fratelli Beretta.

“The true number of sick people in this outbreak is likely much higher than the number reported, and the outbreak may not be limited to the states with known illnesses,” the CDC said. “This is because many people recover without medical care and are not tested for salmonella. In addition, recent illnesses may not yet be reported as it usually takes 3 to 4 weeks to determine if a sick person is part of an outbreak.”

Salmonella strikes about 1.35 million in the United States each year, according to the CDC. Symptoms such as diarrhea, stomachaches and fever can start as soon as six hours after ingesting salmonella and usually run for four to seven days.
