This popular outdoor food market from New York is opening in Miami with local chefs
The biggest open-air food market in the country is opening an outpost in Miami.
Straight out of New York, like seemingly every restaurant concept these days, Smorgasburg started as a Williamsburg market and grew to become a global phenomenon thanks to pop-ups in Sao Paolo and Japan. Think of it as a food hall without a roof, offering diners the chance to try new menus and food vendors the opportunity to test concepts without the expense of restaurant space.
The original Brooklyn location expanded to lower Manhattan, Jersey City and Los Angeles. In March, it will open its first southern location in Wynwood, right next to the neighborhood’s epicenter, Wynwood Walls.
Most of the vendors will be Miami-based, though a few, like Bona Bona Ice Cream, come from New York. The local vendors include Ted’s Burgers; Drinking Pig BBQ; Sandwiches from Eleventh Street Pizza; The Sister Yard; El Diner Latino; and The Maiz Project.
The plan is for around 60 food vendors and 10 retail vendors to set up tents on the property. Visitors will enter on Second Avenue or 26th Street, with the vendors located around the perimeter of the space. Seating — at picnic tables — will be in the center.
Gaston Becherano Cohen, owner of the Omotenashi Group, which is bringing Smorgasburg to Miami, said the popularity of the original food market, which draws upwards of 10,000 visitors any given weekend, shows that the time is right for the opening.
“The culinary scene of Miami has evolved at a breakneck pace,” he said in a statement. “There are dozens of new underground food concepts in Miami that are top-class. We are bringing Smorgasburg to Miami to provide the right spotlight and conditions for these vendors to flourish and grow and build a market that represents the talent and diversity of the South Florida food scene.”
