The last onion loaf has been served in Miami.

Tony Roma’s, the South Florida-born chain specializing in baby back ribs and a magically greasy but crispy loaf of fried onions that sired the Bloomin’ Onion, has closed its last restaurant in Miami-Dade County.

The closing at the Sunny Isles Beach location on Collins Avenue, which coincides with the coronavirus outbreak that has shut down restaurants across South Florida, was announced Tuesday.

“After years of providing South Florida visitors and locals with Tony Roma’s famous ribs and other favorites, we have made the difficult decision to to close our Sunny Isles Tony Roma’s location,” said a press release signed by president and CEO John Brisco. “While this location has given us the opportunity to serve our world-famous ribs to the community and beyond, it’s time we seek new opportunities.”

The release went on to thank customers and employees, adding that “It has been our privilege to provide you with a memorable dining experience each and every time you visited us.”

Old timers will tell you the onion loaf used to be rectangular. Whatever its shape, it was fried salty heaven.

The first Tony Roma’s opened in North Miami in 1972, with a Miami Lakes restaurant opening in 1987, according to the restaurant’s website. It also ran successful franchises across the globe, including in Malaysia.

Things changed here at home, though. One of the last restaurants, on 87th Avenue in Doral, recently made way for a Wawa.

There are two South Florida Tony Roma’s left, one at the Sawgrass Mills Mall in Sunrise and the other in West Palm Beach. There’s also a restaurant on International Drive in Orlando. All are temporarily closed due to the coronavirus pandemic.
