This Miami food hall has a cocktail that tastes like churros, and your prima wants two
Have you ever wanted to sip a cocktail that tastes like churros? Of course you have. You are human.
Bar Politan, the new bar at the heart of Politan Row food hall, is here to make your dream come true. Its revitalized cocktail menu serves this magical elixir - called, not surprisingly, Churros! - and our lives and waistlines may never be the same.
Politan Row, you may recall, used to be St. Roch Market. After settling a federal lawsuit last year, the Design District food hall changed its name. Now it has also rebranded its central bar as Bar Politan and created a new cocktail menu to celebrate.
Under the direction of beverage director Sophie Burton, Bar Politan likes twists on old favorites. Pair a Dice Found is a new school mojito, with Pisco 1615, sweet potato shochu, all spice dram, lime, mint and jello. Miami Winters has lots of unfamiliar ingredients - St. George Terroir gin, Cocchi Americano, Falernum, Luxardo Bianco and Douglas fir - but one sip and its cold, clear perfection will help you remember them.
And then there’s Churros! See, we were not lying about this. Churros! involves Milagro Select Silver, Fortaleza Repo, citrus, pineapple, Chinola, churro orgeat, pineapple amaro and angostura, and whoever created it is a genius. And no - it’s not too sweet.
If you can’t decide what you want, ask mixologist Bart Cannizzaro (or one of the other friendly, helpful bartenders) for suggestions. Cannizzaro is likely to steer you toward his favorite, Haulover and Famous, a twist on the Naked and Famous. This bright orange cocktail is made of El Tinieblo Joven, Casa Noble Crystal, Aperol, chartreuse and lime. It’s too pretty to drink but you can be convinced.
And don’t worry. If your tastes run toward La Rubia on tap or rosé, you can order those, too. Happy hour at Bar Politan runs from 4-7 p.m. Sunday-Thursday.
Politan Row has also introduced two new food vendors. Super Fresh from Chef Paul Kim offers healthy fare like salads, smoothies or superfood bowls like The Amazon ($11) with blueberry and strawberry acai and topped with bananas, kiwi, blueberries, orange, granola and coconut shavings.
Stage Social, run by the husband-and-wife team of Jhon Castro and Tiffany Smith, features all-day breakfast items like pancakes and eggs, but also soft shell crab ($20) or country fried steak ($18) Benedicts. There are salads and sandwiches, too. Two choices you don’t want to miss: the skirt steak sandwich($18) and the lobster sandwich ($23) with warm butter, pickled veggies and garlic aioli. We can’t lie: we could not eat these fast enough. There’s also a BLT with braised pork belly with pesto ($15).
Favorite restaurants remain at Politan Row, too, like Itamae (Peruvian fare and sushi), Coop (spicy, messy, satisfying chicken sandwiches to die for) or Dal Plin (homemade pasta heaven - call us when you find a better cacio e pepe).
