Still rocking at 82: Mick Jagger brings star power to World Cup in Miami
There are celebrities, then there is Sir Mick Jagger.
The Rolling Stones frontman’s star wattage managed to temporarily eclipse the FIFA World Cup action Saturday during the quarterfinal at Hard Rock Stadium.
While soccer gods like Harry Kane and Jude Bellingham were battling it out on the pitch, the music legend, 82, was spotted cheering them on in the priciest of seats.
Jagger, wearing a cap that read “langues étrangères” — French for the title of the band’s new album, “Foreign Tongues” — may have brought his national team some luck. Despite a nerve-wracking 1-0 start (before Bellingham knocked in a deuce), Jagger was seen looking grim and pacing around the VIP box. The eventual outcome after a grueling, sweat-drenched 123 minutes? England vs. Norway 2-1.
Before Jagger’s trip to South Florida, the lifelong Arsenal fan was asked by UK’s The Sun about his country’s chances against Norway, led by team captain Erling Haaland. The Viking striker extraordinaire also plays with Manchester City across the pond.
“We’ve got players who know what he’s about,” the “Jumpin’ Jack Flash” singer told the outlet, adding, “But we’re England, I’ll never say we’re going all the way.”
So will we continue to see the indefatigable rock star pop up at another match? After all, England is closer to its first World Cup win since 1966 when “Paint It Black” was ruling the charts. The Three Lions take on Argentina, with Inter Miami’s not so secret weapon Lionel Messi, Wednesday in Atlanta. The third-place match (bronze medal game) is scheduled for Saturday evening back at Hard Rock in Miami Gardens.
That’s unclear, because as far as we know, the former Florida man doesn’t have a place to hang his hat in Sunshine State anymore. In fall of 2023, Jagger and his partner, retired ballerina Melanie Hamrick, sold their luxe home in Lakewood Ranch, in Sarasota County, about 200 miles northwest from the 305, for $3.25 million. The couple bought in the height of COVID in 2020.
We do know the father of eight (whose kids ages range from 9 to 55) is gathering no moss. The iconic band just dropped their 25th aforementioned album and have been doing the press rounds all over the place. The senior-citizen ballers, whose core lineup still incredibly includes Ronnie Wood and Keith Richards, may even take things on the road.
“I’d love to. I really want to and I’m ready to go,” Jagger said on the “Today” show last Thursday. “I don’t wanna slow down, particularly. I don’t feel like slowing down.”
