‘I didn’t want her to be in jail:’ Emily Estefan speaks out after girlfriend’s arrest
Emily Estefan’s longtime girlfriend was arrested at a South Miami home on Tuesday evening and more details are emerging about the case.
According to the police report from the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office, Gemeny Hernandez was taken into custody after an altercation with her partner of “eight years.”
The victim was not named, but as fans of the local couple know, Hernandez has been in a relationship with Gloria and Emilio Estefan’s daughter for approximately that length of time.
The sheriff’s office complaint says Hernandez and the victim fought over a cellphone, with the women ending up wrestling to the ground. After the defendant “forcefully” grabbed the phone a number of times, the victim, who suffered minor injuries to her left eye and neck, called 911.
Hernandez was arrested on three charges, two for strong-armed robbery, and one for minor assault.
Telemundo 51 posted a snippet from Hernandez’s bail hearing before Miami-Dade Circuit Court Judge Mindy S. Glazer, making it clear that the unnamed victim was indeed Estefan. The 30-year-old musician appears via Zoom appealing for mercy.
“I didn’t want her to be in jail,” says Estefan, composed but fighting back tears. “I begged the detective and the officers not to take her there.”
Glazer responded that there always has to be an arrest in a domestic case.
“I understand, absolutely. I know they were doing their job,” said the singer-songwriter. “But I’m not afraid, I don’t want any order against her.”
A solemn Hernandez, 31, is seen in the clip as well, wearing an orange jumpsuit, her arms crossed, with her lawyer by her side.
As per court records, Glazer granted her bail at $3,000, and imposed a temporary restraining order. Another hearing on the matter is set for Dec. 26.
Hernandez and Estefan went Instagram official in 2017, making a number of public appearances and hosting the “In Our Own World” podcast. Their relationship was a hot topic on a “Red Table Talk” episode back in 2020.
A representative for the Estefans did not request to a Miami Herald request for comment.
