As Hurricane Milton strengthened into a massive Cat. 5 monster, one local TV journalist had to take a brief timeout on Monday.

Before his noontime segment on NBC-6, chief meteorologist John Morales was checking the live tracking radar and appeared to get emotional about the storm’s magnitude. Milton is expected to hit Florida’s Gulf Coast this week, pushing up to 12 feet of devastating storm surge when it makes landfall.

“It’s just an incredible, incredible, incredible hurricane,” Morales said, his voice breaking. “It has dropped...it has dropped 50 millibars [the units of pressure used to describe atmospheric conditions] in 10 hours. I apologize. This is just horrific.”

The award-winning weatherman, who is also passionate about climate change, went on to deliver more alarming news:

“Maximum sustained winds are 160 mph. And it is just gaining strength in the Gulf of Mexico where the winds,” Morales said, pausing again to take a breath. “I mean, the seas, are just so, incredibly, incredibly hot.”

South Florida already is feeling Milton’s wrath, with heavy rains and a flood watch issued Monday, which will remain in effect until Thursday morning. According to the National Weather Service, residents should see the worst of it between late Tuesday and early Wednesday.
