Miami’s commute is officially the worst in the country. We can’t believe it either
There’s no way around it: Trying to get around Miami is the absolute worst.
No, really, the absolute worst - in the country. According to a new study, whether you’re driving or taking public transportation, you’re enduring one of the worst commutes in the United States..
Moovit is here to prove it. A “Mobility as a Service” solutions company and creator of an urban mobility app with more than half a billion users, Moovit has released its 2019 Global Public Transport report. The news is not good for Miami. But you probably realized that when it took you more than an hour to get home last night.
Combining user research in 99 cities around the world and analysis of tens of millions of trip requests, Moovit reports that Miami is the worst city in the United States on several transportation fronts: commuting by car or public transportation. Even walking isn’t so great.
The average commute time for Miami is almost an hour - make that 56 minutes to be precise. We’re tied with Los Angeles for this honor, and if that doesn’t make you sad, nothing will. By contrast, the average commute time for New York City is 54 minutes.
Taking public transportation also takes longer in Miami. Moovit reports that the average wait time for transit in Miami is 16 minutes and 46 seconds, with LA close behind with 16.34.
Miami even has the highest average walking distance during a single average commute: 1,290 meters per trip (sorry, Moovit just loves that metric system). The next closest U.S. city is Seattle, with 966.25 meters. And we’re right up there at the top when it comes to the average number of transfers used during a commute.
There’s more to the Moovit study, too. The survey asked users what would encourage them to use public transportation more often, and the most common response from Miami drivers was shorter wait times.
But to be honest, we don’t have time to delve into it right now. We need to steel ourselves for the drive home.
