Miami’s Jorge Masvidal of UFC and ATT inspires with his memoir, book ‘Born To Fight’
In my video interview with UFC great, American Top Team standout and Miami’s own Jorge “Gamebred” Masvidal, he discusses the content/context from a 2-year memoir/book project on his life titled “BORN TO FIGHT” via Simon & Schuster.
In this inspiring rags-to-riches memoir, Masvidal reveals how he went from a poor son of immigrants on the streets of Florida to one of the most successful athletes in the world, and how you can use those same principles to achieve success in your life.
In a mix of memoir, motivational insights and contemporary political musings, “BORN TO FIGHT” is a rags-to-riches story about Masvidal’s journey from street fighter to a star UFC warrior.
Jorge “Gamebred” Masvidal had a difficult childhood as a poor immigrant kid in Florida. Now, he is one of the most successful and popular fighters on earth, with fans across the world.
Masvidal is the embodiment of the American Dream and is proof that every person has the capacity to overcome adversity and achieve greatness.
Masvidal grew up poor in Florida and the Virgin Islands, raised by a single mother, with no prospects at school and a propensity for fighting. His story is a true beat-all-odds journey that will inspire sports fans—UFC fan or not—and political readers on both sides of the aisle.
He shares the most important lessons he learned along the way, including how to harness his aggression and how he stays motivated, even when the deck is stacked against him, which happened many times.
Masvidal worked several jobs, including telemarketing to garner some wages, make some money. A low GPA prevented him from competing for the Sunset High School wrestling team in Miami. He overcame language barriers as a youth, coupled with ADHD, to become a successful entrepreneur later in life.
Masvidal is now one of the most recognizable stars of Mixed Martial Arts (MMA), having competed professionally for nearly 20 years since his first fight in May 2003.
He was in the Welterweight division of Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), the world’s largest and most prestigious MMA promotion company, and holds the record for the fastest UFC knockout at just five seconds (that worldwide highlight reel flying knee to Ben Askren).
Masvidal beat Nate Diaz for the BMF MMA title at UFC 244 in 2019. Diaz beat Masvidal in a boxing match in 2024.
Masvidal opened eyes with his street fighting wins on fights run by Kimbo Slice in Miami, prior to MMA.
A long journey, he fought MMA for Bellator and Strikeforce and several smaller promotions, before inking a deal with UFC.
Masvidal (35-17) has earned UFC Performance of the Night honors four times and UFC Fight of the Night accolades three times. He beat “Cowboy” Donald Cerrone via TKO and knocked out Darren Till in Till’s homeland England.
Masvidal is friends with President Donald Trump, who has attended some of his fights. Inspirations also include Bruce Lee and Muhammad Ali.
Masvidal participated in pro wrestling for All Elite Wrestling, alongside American Top Team’s Dan Lambert, Junior Dos Santos, Paige Van Zant, Austin Vanderford, Kayla Harrison, Dalton Rosta and Andrei Arlovski and pro wrestlers Ethan Page and Scorpio Sky against Chris Jericho, Sammy Guevara, Santana, Ortiz and Jake Hager. Prior, he appeared at a South Florida indie show (BluePrint Pro) with Blake Bowman and John Hartnett.
Masvidal created, developed, runs his own fighting type promotions, working behind the scenes under the Gamebred banner with Bare Knuckle MMA and iKON FC MMA.
Masvidal, 39, who trains at the prestigious American Top Team in (South Florida) Coconut Creek, is gearing for his next UFC fight.
