Publix announces Washington company’s recall of seven softgel products

Barleans recalled seven kinds of their softgel products, according to an announcement on the Publix website.

Though last week’s announcement appears to be a company-written recall notice, as of Tuesday morning, it doesn’t appear on the FDA’s recall/withdrawal/safety alert page, Barlean’s site or its social media pages. It’s not uncommon for Publix to announce a recall before the FDA posts it.

Coloring caused the problem.

The announcement says Barlean’s used a caramel-coloring ingredient that has sulfites. This isn’t listed among the ingredients.

“Sulfites are not an allergen, but may present “sensitivity” issues for a relatively small subset of consumers,” the announcement says.

This recall covers Essential Woman Softgels in 60-count and 12-count bottles; 90-count Ultra DHA Softgels Lemonade Flavor; 60-count Ultra EPA-DHA Orange Flavor Softgels; 90-count Master Blend Total Mega Softgels; 100-count and 250-count Fish Oil Orange Flavor Softgels; and 250-count Lignan Flax Oil Softgels.

All have a best by date of January 2022 or earlier.

Consumers are asked to return them to the place of purchase.
