USDA public health alert: Don’t know much about these Cooked Duck Blood Curds from China
The USDA issued a public health alert about certain 300 g (10.58-ounce) packs of cooked duck blood curds, and not because of discomfort with what it knows. It knows very little, and that’s why the alert got issued.
And what it doesn’t know might pile up higher than the cooked duck blood curds in question. “Might” because the USDA, which usually gives the approximate weight of food in its alerts and recalls, doesn’t know how many packs are involved.
▪ Are the curds recalled? “A recall was not requested because (USDA Food Safety Inspection Service) has been unable to contact the importer.”
▪ What’s the problem? FSIS hasn’t had the chance to do an import re-inspection nor has it received an inspection certificate by the Chinese government that says this product can be imported, “therefore, this product is ineligible to import into the U.S., making it unfit for human consumption.”
▪ So just toss them out, right? Wrong. The USDA wants you to double bag them before throwing them in the garbage to cut down the chance on animals getting into the duck blood curds. The agency doesn’t know that the duck blood curds were heated enough to deal with pathogens possibly harmful to livestock.
